SportsPower Local Legend: Danni Casey
Our local legend from Nuriootpa
Danni was nominated by Emily to be a SportsPower local legend. Here’s what Emily had to say…
She has given so much to the Tanunda Hockey Club. She supports the juniors right through to the senior teams, and never asks for anything in return. She is one of the most generous people I have ever known and she is a legend in the local community. She already is a local legend; this would just make it official.
After that nomination, we wanted to have a further Q&A with Danni to really understand this legend.
How did you get into your chosen sport?
I went out to my first hockey practice at the age of 6 at school. Straight away I knew I loved hockey. I was lucky to have a fantastically passionate hockey coach who spent time teaching me, and many others the many aspects of the game. It is a team sport that requires everyone to do their bit. There is a lot of skill required in hockey and it is also quite a physically demanding. However, the one thing that probably got me hooked was the challenge of the sport. The challenge to improve skills individually and as a team.
Do you have a favourite brand, product, or range that you like to buy from SportsPower?
What are some of your training tips?
My training tip would be to practice and practice often. Practice individually and practice as a team. I remember as a kid doing nothing but hitting a ball against the gutter and stopping the rebound – over and over again. I spent hours doing that to perfect my hitting and trapping skills.
The best piece of advice I can give is to be coachable. Respect and listen to your coach and you will learn and improve.
How do you stay motivated?
My true passion for the sport and my want to give back to the sport keeps me motivated and keeps me involved in all aspects of hockey.
What’s your favourite quote/s?
I have two favourite quotes –
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” Albert Einstein.
“There are people who make things happen, there are people who watch things happen, and there are people who wondered what happened. To be successful, you need to be a person who makes things happen”. James A Lovell
Who is your sporting legend?
Gary Ablett Snr has always been a sporting legend to me purely from the individual skill and abilities he had.
Ric Charlesworth is my hockey sporting legend as his game knowledge and his ability to coach teams to high performance through engaging athletes is amazing.
What else can you tell us about your story…
I have played hockey most of my life apart from a spell in the middle where I was injured quite badly and my career took the front seat. Although I have retired from playing, I am heavily involved in hockey at a local association and club level, regional level and also state level. My passion is coaching, although I am also the present Tanunda Hockey Club President and am very passionate about continuing to build and develop Tanunda Hockey Club in all aspects. I also umpire and help with the development of umpires in the Barossa Valley Hockey Association.
