SportsPower Local Legend: Mitchell Porter
Our local legend from Inverell
We had a Q&A with Mitchell to really understand this legend.
How did you get into your chosen sport?
My hometown of Warialda is a die hard rugby league town and I was converted to the game after years of playing playing soccer. My first game of rugby happened when I was in Year 7 at school and the rugby league team was short of players for their game against Macintyre High School. The coach came and asked me if I was keen for a game and I thought why not and agreed. I ended up scoring a couple of meat pies and kicking a few goals as well because of my background in soccer. From memory we ended winning that game and after that I was hooked. At the age of 14, I decided it was time for me put on the red and black jersey of the Warialda wombats and play my first season of rugby league.
Do you have a favourite brand, product, or range that you like to buy from SportsPower?
I have to admit; I have a secret obsession with shoes/joggers. I have no idea what it is, probably my sporting background doesn’t help but there is nothing better than a comfortable pair of runners to wear all day. My go-to pair of jogger would probably be the Asics range closely followed by the Nike range. Asics are probably the most comfortable jogger I have ever worn. They offer great support and cushioning and seem to be long lasting because I do put my shoes to the test. They also have a great range of styles and colors which also make easy to wear. Asics are also my go too football boot, I have been wearing them for the past 5/6 years. They offer great response, are light and very durable.
What are some of your training tips and best advice you were given that made you better?
Practice – the only way to improve in your chosen sport/activity is to practice as much as you can but also enjoying it at the same time.
Variety – don’t focus all your energy into one sport, try as many sports as you can, a lot of skills can be transferred from sport to sport. By expanding your skill set from a variety of sports it can improve and enhance performance your chosen sport and take you to the next level.
The Challenge – enjoy the challenge of sport, no matter where you play whether its for your school or for your local sporting team always try to improve and challenge yourself to better, taking what ever advice on board. Rarely is there ever-bad advice, all advice can help you.
How do you stay motivated?
The challenge, the thrill and the excitement you get from it all. The challenge of always looking to improve your game, not settling for ‘near enough is good enough’ always looking to develop my skill set to take my game to the next level. The thrill and excitement being able to do something day in day out that makes you happy and being able to share it with your mates.
What’s your favourite quote?
“The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory “
Who is your sporting legend?
Cam Smith and Jonathon Thurston – both players dominate at the elite level, no matter what game it is or what situation is thrown at them always give 110%. Win, lose or draw they will act the same no matter what the outcome. Humble and professional at the same time. They would also do anything in their power to help a team mate out on and off field.
